NANAS (Lullabies)

Nanas will explore the melodies that put our children to sleep, while keeping it’s eyes wide open for what keeps them up at night.
The documentary will explore the world of “Nanas” (lullabies), the comforting, narcotic song of intimacy that mothers and children share throughout the world. This is the primary focus, however, Nanas will also scan the health of children’s rights through the stories of characters encountered throughout the journey. 2009 marked the 20thanniversary of the UN declaration of the rights of the child. This treaty, the most ratified in the history of International treaties, generated a series of commitments and obligations towards children that many countries are still failing to comply with. Latin America is no exception. A remarkably extensive report was published to commemorate this benchmark, providing an overview of the current situation in the continent. Nanas will focus on the children’s rights issues in most need of address in Latin America. Through the work of a number of grass roots organizations in different countries, the documentary will illustrate the issues that most affect the children of the continent. Child Labor in Ecuador, malnutrition in Guatemala, illiteracy in Colombia, drugs in Bolivia etc, each crisis will bring forth a protagonist, and a story of struggle and hope.
The crew will travel throughout Latin America searching for the most beautiful, moving, bedtime songs, and characters able to transmit their emotion and beauty. The songs will be examined in detail, together with their social and cultural context, their relationship to the local folklore and music, and the family structures within which they came to being. Concurrently, the investigation will also aim to portray the condition of children within the social context in which these folkloric manifestations originate. The narrative will unfold as a road trip throughout the continent, in which every stop (as well as eventful travels and occurrences in between) will give way to a new story. Each new story introduced in the main website will then be echoed on all other social networks and web mediums. Videos, audio recordings of lullabies and musical folklore, as well as written episodes will narrate the experience of adventure and discovery, and illustrate the various topics that NANAS will explore.
This film will grab at you with multiple hands and holds. It will excite your eyes with colorful folk traditions and breathtaking landscapes, caress your ears with sweet song and music, and warm the heart with stories of love and human struggle. It is a documentary born from profound social motivations and concerns. Its subject matter spans from deeply rooted, cultural heritage and the necessity to safeguard and portray its beauty, to urgent humanitarian issues constantly in need of attention and address.  We wish to inform the public of the current condition of children in Latin America, promote respect for their rights and contribute to their future welfare.
